Modern Muay Thai

Ben Saunders: Orlando ThaiBox ClubMuay Thai has been practiced for centuries, but it is only in the last 20 years that its popularity has reached every corner of the world. Muay Thai is recognized globally as the world's hottest ring sport. It's also part of elite military and law-enforcement training all over the world. Organizations like the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Navy Seals, and various SWAT teams have adopted Muay Thai techniques as part of their hand to hand combat repertoire.

Muay Thai is officially regulated by the World Muay Thai Council (WMTC), the professional sanctioning body endorsed and accredited by the government of Thailand. Other organizations have sprung up around the world to promote local and international competition and to offer official titles, all within the guidelines provided by the WMTC.

Muay Thai's rapid increase in international popularity began in the late 1990's, and has continued to this day. For example, in April 1997, there were 26 countries affiliated with the WMTC, but by August of 1998 that number had reached 54. Since the sport has only increased in popularity along with the recent explosive success of mixed martial arts fighting organizations like the UFC and the WEC, where thorough familiarity with Muay Thai striking techniques has become a necessity for survival. Muay Thai has also become a part of mainstream culture in America, where it is quickly growing in reputation as a fierce fighting art and spectacular ring sport.
